Intumescent Paint Nsw is the type of a fire retarding paint. When exposed to flames of fire it largely expands for becoming black foam or char barrier that could be approximately one inch thick and it also coats the whole surface that paint has been put on. The char barrier mainly cuts off the much needed fuel to burning fire and also protects underlying structure giving precious additional time for evacuation of occupants of the building and permitting the fire fighters to reach and quench blaze so that damage could be minimised.
Development of the intumescent paints
The intumescent paints started in 1980s. But till recently they’ve been used widely. Many of the earlier versions of the paint were quite difficult to be applied and a thick coat was required. They used to be quite lumpy in their texture and the application needed a trained professional with specialised equipment. Some of the paints comprised of carcinogenic or toxic chemicals. Others used to base on the fire retarding chemicals in water. It meant that the paints didn’t bond properly with surfaces on which they were applied. Other coatings or paints also didn’t bond well with them. In spite of these problems, early type of intumescent paint played a very important role in some of the situations like oil rigs, chemical manufacturing plant, oil refineries, etc.
These days, these paints have been improved. They could be applied easily with the help of a roller or a brush and polymer based so that they bond to different surface types. They are completely non-toxic and non-irritating to skin.
